On Approaching the Music of Eliane Radigue

Elaine Radigue - Triptych

I usually listen for layers and depth in music. Interesting music, not unlike interesting art, contains multiple levels of relationships and encourages repeated encounters in various ways. With interesting music, the passive listener receives something, the specialist receives something, and the scholar has countless material from which to draw from, not to mention the young composer, who too sees areas of connection and inspiration.

While listening to Radigue´s music one morning, I thought of the “layers of missing things.” The depths of things missing became my meditation during subsequent listening sessions. By imagining the musical elements which this music seemed not to have, I began to notice their presence in interesting ways and the music began to open itself to me.
